Frequently Asked Questions

1. WHY CHOOSE PHILADELPHIA HEBREW DAY SCHOOL?

Families choose PHDS for many different reasons, including our…

High quality secular education combined with our engaging and rigorous limudei kodesh  program. Center-based learning combined with a strengths-based approach means more personalized attention and the recognition (and appreciation!) of different learning styles. We meet students where they are.

Commitment to meaningful social and emotional development. In our intentionally nurturing and positive environment, expectations are clear, everyone feels like they belong, and joy permeates the very air of the classroom. In this space, children grow into new responsibilities, learn to accurately express their emotions, and practice kindness and respect.

Pride in Medinat Yisrael with a core focus on Ivrit. Our students will feel a deep sense of  connection to Israel as our ancestral heritage and a modern-day miracle, and they will converse  confidently in Hebrew. Understanding the Hebrew language will help students gain a better  understanding of the Torah that they learn.

Location. You don’t need to look too far to find a school that fits your hashkafa and provides your  child with the supportive environment they need to grow and learn in confidence. It’s right in the  Northeast Philadelphia region. It’s PHDS.

2. WHAT IS YOUR ADMISSIONS PROCESS?

Thank you for your interest in Philadelphia Hebrew Day School. Please Find the Admissions process on our admissions page.  We look forward to meeting  you and beginning a relationship of mutual growth and learning!

3. WHEN DO APPLICATIONS OPEN? IS THERE AN APPLICATION DEADLINE?

For the 2024-2025 school year, applications open on February 5, 2024. The application deadline is March 31, 2024. After that, children will only be accepted space-permitting.

4. WHAT IS YOUR TUITION?

Although the cost to educate your child is $20,000, we only charge $13,450 base tuition. In addition, there is a $530 administrative fee per family and a $250 registration fee. We have multiple payment plans available to meet your family’s needs.

5. DO YOU OFFER FINANCIAL AID?

Philadelphia Hebrew Day School is committed to providing a quality Jewish education to all students and families, regardless of need. No family will be denied an education at PHDS based  solely on their financial means. Therefore, we take pride in the tuition assistance programs we offer
at PHDS, which provide our families with dignified and flexible options for affording tuition. Financial aid applications will be sent along with your tuition contract after your acceptance into our program.

6. WHAT IS YOUR STUDENT TO FACULTY RATIO?

Regardless of enrollment, our kindergarten instructional ratio does not exceed 8 to 1. Children thrive in a personalized and supportive educational environment.

7. DO YOU ADMIT STUDENTS WHO LEARN OR BEHAVE  DIFFERENTLY?

PHDS does consider applications for students with identified or suspected mild to moderate learning and behavioral challenges. Our out-of-classroom support is limited in our first year of operation. However, our low student to faculty ratio, our center-based learning approach, as well as the techniques of Responsive Classroom and Conscious Discipline used by our faculty, allow our teachers to give extra support and scaffolding to students who will benefit from it within the classroom setting.
We require a completed application, including all documentation of diagnoses and existing IEPs or other service plans in order to make an admission decision.
